Eastern or Western Mediterranean - What’s the Difference?!

With European cruising being “the ticket” this year and because we have several great cruises on deck, pun intended, I've had quite a few people ask me about cruising in the Mediterranean. Since this is such a large area, I thought it would be a good time to share some intel on the differences between an Eastern and a Western Mediterranean cruise. While both cruises will offer enchanting experiences and incredible cuisine, there are some major differences in stops and activities that you can choose from on your itinerary.

Eastern Mediterranean Cruises
Some countries you’ll visit on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise include Italy, Croatia, Turkey, and Greece. If you love sun and sand, want to get lost in myths and legends, or just want to explore parts of the Middle East, this may be the perfect option. With some of the world’s best beaches and a more consistent climate, you’ll be able to have a relaxing beach day in between your adventures into “the ancient world.” Some common port experiences include: 

1. Taking a Game of Thrones Tours: Dubrovnik was a filming location and inspiration for King's Landing. You, too, can walk the path of Cersei's famous Walk of Shame.
2. Visiting a Greek God: You can visit the Temple of Zeus and many other Grecian ruins in Olympia. Afterward, visit a local vineyard and partake in some wine tasting.
3. Entering the Old World: Visit parts of the former Ottoman Empire in Istanbul. Not only will you pass by some of the oldest mosques in the world, but you can also visit the Spice Market and take in some of the wonderfully pungent aromas of the region.

Western Mediterranean Cruises
While Western Mediterranean cruises also visit some parts of Italy, you’ll be able to visit Spain, France, and Monaco. If you are a fan of shopping and sophistication, consider yourself a history buff, and a major foodie - a Western Mediterranean Cruise may be for you. Here you’ll be able to explore history in the comfort of air-conditioned museums, shop in some of the most famous fashion districts in France and Italy, or check out some of these incredible port experiences: 

1. Become a Gladiator: Or at least pretend to, as you visit the renowned Colosseum, its many rooms, and the nearby Roman Forum.
2. Lunch and Flamenco: Not only must you stop at La Sagrada Familia, but you must also take in a traditional paella in Barcelona while being entertained by dancing performers.
3. Grand Prix Circuit: While you may not actually be racing one of the vehicles for the championship, you do get to drive along the same route. Afterward, you'll have some free time to spend your casino winnings at nearby jewelry boutiques.
