Heading off on vacation is exciting, but it's natural to worry about your home's security while you're away. Here are some simple, but often overlooked, reminders to help you protect your property while you enjoy your trip.
Home Monitoring Systems
A home monitoring system can provide peace of mind while you're traveling. These systems now include features like alarms and notifications that alert you if something unusual happens at your home. Many systems also offer the option to contact a list of emergency contacts if you cannot be reached.
Rely on Your Network
Designate a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you're away. They can collect mail, water plants (lest they look like mine when you return - brown is NOT a usual plant leaf color!!), and generally ensure your home looks occupied.
Manage Your Mail
If you don't have someone to collect your mail, put a hold on it with the post office and arrange for package deliveries to be held at a local pickup location. Try as we might to avoid package deliveries, something always shows up on our doorstep. Again, a good neighbor can help if something gets dropped on your porch. A pile of accumulating mail, even if in one of the locked boxes on your street, is a clear sign that no one is home.
Illuminate Your Absence
A well-lit home can deter potential intruders. Consider installing motion-sensor lights or using timers to turn lights on and off at different times to give the impression that someone is home.
Mind Your Social Media
Social media can be a great way to share your travel adventures, but it can also inadvertently advertise your absence. Be mindful of what you share online and consider adjusting your privacy settings to limit who can see your posts.
