Happy Chanukah to all that are celebrating this week! I hope that if you are celebrating this joyous holiday, that you take some time for family, food and fun!
During Chanukah 2018, I was in Europe. The continent was in full swing for the Christmas season, but I was able to find a bit of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, wherever I went- even if it was a bit of a stretch. It started with a layover in Berlin to see our daughter. She took me to a Christmas market where, of course, we ate latkes and drank glühwein, the German traditional mulled wine! Then, it was on to Zagreb. What a beautiful city at holiday time. Their Christmas market has been named one of the top markets in the world, known for its beautiful light displays. The night-time picture shows that market. It boasts a fabulous ice rink with many multi-colored lights against the backdrop of the historic Zagreb train station.
On a walking tour of this interesting and historical city, without a lot of tourists I would add, we found a Chanukah menorah (Hanukkiah for the more technical reader!). It was in the middle of a city square, ready to be lit that evening. If you look closely, you can see that it was to be the second night of Chanukah.
Ironically finishing this and looking forward to not only Chanukah but also the simple pleasure of lights in our home after two days of power shutoffs. Thank goodness for all of those extra Chanukah candles we have stashed away!
