From time to time, I like to highlight a destination that may not yet be on everyone’s radar but absolutely deserves a place on the list. Patagonia is one of those places.
Many travelers lately have been asking about destinations that feel a little removed from the headlines while still offering extraordinary experiences. Patagonia immediately comes to mind. It is also exactly the right moment to begin planning. The best time to visit runs from November through March, and because the region’s lodges are intentionally small, the most desirable options tend to book well in advance.
Located at the southern tip of South America, Patagonia spans both Chile and Argentina and is known for some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. Think towering granite peaks, massive glaciers, turquoise lakes, and wide-open spaces that feel almost untouched. Two areas often stand out for travelers. The first is Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, famous for its jagged mountain towers and spectacular scenery. The second is the region around El Calafate in Argentina, where visitors can stand just steps away from the immense Perito Moreno Glacier and watch ice break and crash into the water below.
What surprises many travelers is how comfortable the experience can be. Patagonia offers wonderful lodges, excellent guiding, and thoughtfully designed itineraries that balance exploration with relaxation. You do not have to be an extreme adventurer to enjoy it. Many trips combine scenic walks, wildlife viewing, boat excursions, and time to simply take in the landscape.
Travelers often combine Patagonia with other remarkable destinations in the region. It pairs beautifully with Buenos Aires for culture and cuisine, Chilean wine country near Santiago, or even an expedition to the Galápagos Islands for extraordinary wildlife.
For travelers who have visited much of Europe and are looking for something completely different, Patagonia can be extraordinary. It offers the kind of scenery and sense of scale that stays with you long after you return home.
If Patagonia has been on your list, this is a good time to start the conversation. Planning ahead opens up the best routing, the best lodges, and the most enjoyable pace for the trip.
Warmly,
Lisa
